Arabesque: Restore Strength and Stability in the Knee
Are you recovering from a knee injury or surgery? It’s essential to do rehabilitative exercises that help improve your stability and strength to help prevent further damage and assist the recovery process. One exercise to add to your routine is the arabesque. Here are its benefits and how to do it right.
Benefits of the arabesque
The arabesque exercise is designed to enhance or restore balance following a knee injury or surgery. It trains the body to move over a stable single leg while maintaining a strong and neutral posture in the lumbar and pelvis. When done correctly, it can improve higher-level balance and strengthen the gluteals, hip stabilisers, quads, hamstrings and lower back.
How to do the arabesque
- Start this exercise standing upright with your feet spread hip-width apart
- Activate your core by pulling your belly button toward your spine. Shift your weight onto the leg to be exercised
- Spread your arms out and raise them to shoulder level while hinging forward at the hip and extending your free leg behind you. Your knees should be slightly bent to help you maintain balance.
- Hold the described position for a moment, then slowly retrace your movements to the starting position.
- As you get into the starting position, bend the knee for your free leg and lift it so your thigh becomes parallel with the ground.
- You can do this exercise on one leg and then the other or alternate between the two.
- Complete at least 10 reps per leg in 2-3 sets.
