What You Need to Know About Scoliosis

Scoliosis is an abnormal curvature of the spine that is often sideways.
Also known as idiopathic scoliosis, the condition usually occurs during adolescence or in those still developing.
The signs and symptoms tend to be mild, but they may develop into more severe cases as the individual ages.
Severe cases can present with deformities and pain.
In some instances, scoliosis can reduce the amount of space available for the lungs to expand, making it difficult to breathe.
About three per cent of the population is estimated to have scoliosis.
Symptoms of scoliosis
Some symptoms of scoliosis include:
- Abnormality in prominence of the shoulder blade
- Uneven waist, hips and shoulders
- Protrusion of the rib cage, usually on one side.
- Chronic back pain - Difficulty breathing - Muscle spasms
Common types of scoliotic curves
A scoliotic curve usually looks like a backwards C shape bending to the right - this is known as dextroscoliosis.
The opposite, a regular C shape bending to the left, is known as levoscoliosis.
Causes of scoliosis
It's believed genetics and hereditary factors may play a role; however, there is often no known cause of the condition.
Some risk factors of scoliosis include age and gender - adolescents and females tend to develop worse symptoms over time.
Some other causes of scoliosis can include:
- Neuromuscular conditions such as cerebral palsy or muscular dystrophy
- Birthing defects
- Surgery at a young age
- Trauma to the spine

Treatment of scoliosis
There are a few ways to manage and treat scoliosis, including closely observing the area or wearing a brace.
Surgery might be required for more severe cases, with a doctor able to recommend the most suitable option.
Wearing a brace for scoliosis
A scoliotic curve will not straighten on its own, however studies have shown wearing a brace may be able to support the spine and prevent it from worsening.
A brace can also assist in lessening the degree of curvature of the spine.
At Bauerfeind, we offer braces that can assist with managing scoliosis.
