Best Knee Braces For Dancing

WHY SHOULD DANCERS WEAR A KNEE BRACE WHEN DANCING?

Dancers can perform hundreds of jumps in a single dance class, so it’s no surprise that knee pain is a common problem.

Common knee injuries dancers develop are:

  • Meniscus Tears: Overuse of the knee joint during twisting movements.
  • ACL injury: Awkward landing during jumps on hard surface.

Wearing a Bauerfeind brace or knee support can minimise your risk of developing a dancing injury by providing enhanced stability, proprioception and moisture-wicking, medical-grade compression.

Many dancers will tend to push through despite the pain, however this can cause more problems in the long run.

It is important to get on top of these issues as soon as they arise to avoid further muscle imbalance, weakness or a progression in the injury.

WHAT SHOULD I DO TO PREVENT KNEE PAIN WHEN DANCING?

It is important to allow adequate rest between the days that you are dancing to allow your body to recover. Ensuring a good warm up and cool down will also help to get your blood flowing to your working muscles.

HOW TO TREAT A DANCING KNEE INJURY?

We recommend seeking treatment from a physiotherapist on treating a dancing injury. They may recommend one the following treatments.

  • Strains or Sprains. Many sprains and strains can be treated with the RICE method: Rest, Ice, Compression and Elevation. A good physiotherapist can assist with the recovery however prevention is always better than cure.
  • Jumper’s Knee. This is commonly known as Patellar tendonitis. Rarely does this condition require surgery. It can generally be treated using a combination of anti-inflammatory medications (such as ibuprofen) and exercise. A corticosteroid injection may also be used.

Play it safe: Consult a doctor if you experience unusually intense and persistent knee pain.
