Best Knee Braces For Surfing

Surfing is an intense water sport which puts a lot of pressure on your knees, especially the ligaments and tendons of the back surfing leg. Due to the twisting movements of the back knee while increasing speed or manoeuvering the surfboard, surfers are a high risk of ACL and MCL tears.

If you are suffering from an advanced cruciate or collateral injuries such as Grade 2 and Grade 3, we recommend using SecuTec Genu knee orthosis. Its salt water friendly and can be washed after use.

The SecuTec Genu assists with healing a torn ligament, collateral ligament injury or operation on the meniscus, and is best used when the knee joint needs to be stabilised from outside for a period of time.

Wearing a Bauerfeind brace or knee support can minimise your chances of a surfing injury by providing strong stabilisation of the knee. This added support will help stabilise your joint without limiting your ability to ride a wave, enjoy a barrel or hang ten.

We do not recommend using a cheap neoprene knee brace or knee sleeves to prevent surfing injuries. These sleeves offer little support and do not wick moisture. Combined this decreases the durability of the knee brace.

Using a 3D weave and moisture wicking fabric, Bauerfeind knee braces are ideal for both everyday and sports use. As the old saying goes, you do get what you pay for.

"I got over excited when I saw a nice big wave... over rotated the forward, twisted my foot in the strap... 😔 People helped my out of the water, unable to walk.. I broke my foot and leaving a permanent injury. I started slow and just by training airjibes again because of the injuries" - Jazzy Zwerus

Making sure you complete appropriate warm ups prior to and after surfing to help relax and loosen muscles. Don’t squat on your board for extended periods of time as this can cause extra strain on your knees.

We recommend visiting a physiotherapist for treatment and advice on treating surfing injuries. They may recommend one of the following treatments.
    • Strains or Sprains. Many sprains and strains can be treated with the RICE method: Rest, Ice, Compression and Elevation. A good physiotherapist can assist with the recovery however prevention is always better than cure.
    • Meniscal Tearing. Simple meniscal tears may be treated with the RICE method and anti-inflammatory medications. Advanced tears may require surgery. Muscle weakness can be a precursor to a ligament sprain or tear.
    • Knee Ligament Injury. Advanced and severe ligament damage will often require surgery. A torn ligament rebuild uses a tissue graft, as the ligament will not generally heal properly otherwise. For grade three knee ligament injuries a hinged knee brace is recommended.
