A decrease in balance is common following an ankle sprain and for those with chronic ankle problems. The single-leg stand (or single-leg balance) will improve balance and strength in the joint, helping rehabilitate it after injury.

HOW TO DO THE SINGLE-LEG BALANCE

  1. Stand upright with your feet spread hip-width apart.
  2. Slightly bend your knees.
  3. Lift one foot off the ground, keeping your knees close together without touching.
  4. Try to maintain your balance for 10 seconds.
  5. Keep your body as still as possible during this exercise. Relax and repeat as your ability allows.

SUPPORT YOUR SINGLE-LEG BALANCE

When the ligaments that support the ankle become compromised by injury, the Bauerfeind MalleoTrain Ankle Support can enhance stability to reduce pain and improve function.

  • Compression knit fabric activates the muscle to support the ankle
  • It works with the brace’s massage pads to relieve pain
  • Compression also boosts circulation and reduces swelling

WHY IS IT IMPORTANT TO REHABILITATE AFTER AN ANKLE INJURY?

The ankle is one of our most critical body parts, and due to a complex mix of ligaments, bones and joints, it is also one of the most frequently injured.

Rehabilitation has been shown to reduce the risk of recurring ankle injuries significantly. It may also help to prevent the development of posttraumatic arthritis, which is associated with ankle injuries.

Regaining a full range of motion, strength, and coordination is important during ankle sprain rehabilitation. Speak with a medical professional who can tailor a rehabilitation program for your needs. They may recommend such things as:

  • Following the RICE method. Rest the injured joint, apply an ice pack for 15-20 minutes, compress the area with compression wrap or, ideally, a compression brace, and elevate the ankle above heart level.
  • Pain and anti-inflammatory medication in combination with rehabilitation exercises.
  • An ankle brace to support the ankle during recovery and prevent further injury.
